Healing Substance Use and Co-Occurring Anxiety

Our approach to dual diagnosis treatment for anxiety and addiction implements a personalized treatment plan for each patient that supports them in working through both substance use and accompanying mental health challenges such as anxiety.

The two conditions may be connected; however, there isn’t always a single reason why they occur together. A person may use substances to cope with anxiety, while substance use or withdrawal may contribute to increased anxiety. An integrated therapeutic approach helps individuals address mental health disorders, develop healthier coping strategies, and achieve lasting recovery.

Our evidence-based approach to recovery includes medically supervised detoxification, residential rehab, psychotherapy or talk therapy, and experiential interventions such as mindfulness training to support physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

Whole-Person Healing Rooted in Hawaii

Hawaii Island Recovery takes a whole-person approach to healing, recognizing the connection between mind, body, and spirit. From detox and residential treatment through IOP and aftercare, patients are supported within a close-knit community and a setting that incorporates the culture, environment, and spirit of Hawaii.

Intimate, Individualized Care

With no more than eight patients at a time, we offer a highly personalized setting where each person can receive focused attention, develop meaningful relationships with staff, and work toward lasting change.

Mind, Body, and
Spirit

Healing extends beyond addressing substance use. Patients can participate in evidence-based therapies alongside yoga, meditation, acupuncture, massage, fitness, nutrition, and other services that support physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual well-being.

The Healing Environment of Hawaii

Located in Kailua-Kona, we incorporate our island setting into the recovery experience. Local culture, community, and cuisine are woven into programming to help patients experience recovery as a way of living, not simply a period of treatment.

A Connected Continuum of Care

We offer detox, residential treatment, and IOP, creating a pathway for patients to receive ongoing support as their needs change. Continuing care and aftercare remain an important part of helping each person carry the work of healing into everyday life.

Community as Part of Recovery

Recovery happens in relationships with others. We foster a strong sense of community where patients can build connections, practice healthy ways of relating, and develop a support system that can extend beyond their time in residential care.

A Foundation for Life Beyond Treatment

The goal is not simply to complete a program, but to help patients move toward greater self-reliance, purpose, and freedom from substance dependence. Our holistic approach gives patients space to discover how recovery can fit into the life they want to build.

Types of Anxiety Disorders and Mental Health Concerns Treated

Anxiety disorders are more common than you might think. At least one in six people experience an anxiety disorder each year. Our co-occurring anxiety disorder treatment helps patients manage anxiety, trauma-related challenges, and other mental health conditions that may occur alongside substance use disorder (SUD).

Generalized Anxiety Disorder

GAD involves persistent, excessive worry, often about work, finances, relationships, and other areas of life. Some of the symptoms usually seen with GAD include restlessness, feeling constantly tired or fatigued, difficulty concentrating or falling asleep, irritability, or feeling constantly on edge.

Social Anxiety Disorder

Social anxiety disorder involves intense fear around feeling judged, embarrassed, rejected, or negatively evaluated by others in a social situation. This type of fear can make it challenging to engage in everyday activities, perform at work, or interact comfortably with others in a social setting.

Trauma and PTSD

Experiencing trauma can have lasting effects on a person’s sense of safety and well-being. For people experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), our integrated therapeutic approach can be particularly beneficial.

The good news is help is available. You do not need to struggle on your own. We carry out detailed and individualized assessments to understand where patients are right now, what their recovery goals look like, and then determine the right combination of therapeutic interventions that may benefit them.

Phobias and Other Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety can also take the form of phobias or other disorders. A phobia refers to an intense fear of a person, object, or situation that is disproportionate or significantly greater than the threat or danger involved. Individuals may resort to unhealthy behaviors, such as avoidance, as a coping mechanism.

Panic Attacks and Panic Disorder

A panic attack takes place when there is a sudden episode of intense fear or discomfort with physical symptoms such as a racing heart, shortness of breath, sweating, trembling, or chest discomfort. Panic disorder occurs when a person experiences frequent panic attacks that interfere with their normal activities.

Anxiety Treatments in Addiction Recovery

Anxiety therapy in addiction recovery is crucial for lasting well-being. At Hawaii Island Recovery, our rehab for anxiety and addiction combines evidence-based therapy with holistic interventions. This approach enables patients to learn effective tools to manage anxiety, deal with difficult experiences, and process uncomfortable emotions in healthier ways.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT is an evidence-based talk therapy that helps patients identify patterns of thoughts contributing to their anxiety and develop more constructive ways of responding to difficult situations.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT helps strengthen emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal skills. These skills can help patients deal with stressful situations confidently without resorting to substances for temporary relief.

Group Therapy and Individual Therapy

Individual therapy provides a safe space to explore complex feelings and emotions related to substance use and co-occurring anxiety. Group therapy offers peer connection and reassurance that you are not alone in your recovery journey.

Mindfulness, Meditation, and Yoga

Mindfulness, meditation, and yoga are key components of our holistic approach. They help patients build awareness of feelings and emotions, and reactions to stress. Regular practice can foster greater calm, self-knowing, and the ability to manage intense or complex feelings in a healthy manner.

Experiential and Neurofeedback Therapies

Our experiential therapies offer a meaningful way to engage with other people and the environment to support whole-person wellness. Neurofeedback treatment measures electrical activity (EEG) in real time. This approach allows the clinician and patient to gain better insight into the brain’s functioning. Ocean-and nature-based experiential therapies allow patients to connect with the natural world in a therapeutic setting, with the aim of enhancing self-awareness, supporting physical exercise, and promoting emotional well-being.

Levels of Care for Anxiety and Addiction

Anxiety and substance use can affect each other in complex ways, which is why integrated care becomes critical. At Hawaii Island Recovery, co-occurring anxiety treatment is a core part of our work, with the level of support tailored to each person’s needs and goals.

Medical Detox

Medically supervised detox to manage withdrawal and provide medical support, when appropriate, is carried out under the supervision of our in-house board-certified addictionologist and licensed clinical team. Anxiety and mental health needs are evaluated during this critical stage for treatment planning.

Residential Treatment

Our residential program provides a structured setting for patients who may need a more intensive layer of support. At our residential rehab facility, we provide individualized treatment plans that are comprehensive in nature. In addition to evidence-based therapies, we may also include talk therapy, coaching, experiential programming, and nature-based activities. We view healing as whole-person-based, and our approach addresses all aspects of good health, whether physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual.

Intensive Outpatient Care

Hawaii Island Recovery’s intensive outpatient program (IOP) provides ongoing support as patients build the practical skills and resilience needed to navigate their way through everyday life. Outpatient care plans may include individual and group therapy, case management, medication management support, recovery coaching, and relapse-prevention education, as needed for each client.

Continuing Care and Aftercare

Recovery does not end with treatment. We recognize that patients may confront challenges as they start to more proactively engage with relationships and responsibilities outside of our treatment facilities. Our continuum of care model offers psychotherapy, recovery coaching, peer and community support, and other resources to help patients strengthen and continue to progress, so they can thrive once anxiety and substance use disorder treatment is complete.

Personalized Care for Co-Occurring Anxiety and Substance Use

At Hawaii Island Recovery, our healing programs are designed to address substance use disorders alongside mental health challenges that may affect recovery, including anxiety, depression, PTSD, eating disorders, and trauma. Each person’s experience with these conditions and response to healing can vary. Our experts work with patients to understand their unique needs and develop an individualized plan of care.

Care for Adults With Co-Occurring Needs

Our primary focus is adults dealing with the dual challenges of substance misuse and co-occurring mental health challenges. An integrated mental health and addiction treatment program helps patients understand the underlying causes of their condition, manage its drivers, and develop the tools needed for sustainable recovery.

An Intimate Recovery Environment

We admit a maximum of eight patients at a time to ensure the setting is conducive to personalized care and attention. Our smaller group size also ensures that we can devote our resources to ensuring each patient gets the best possible care.

Medical and Clinical Support

Our multidisciplinary clinical team monitors patients throughout their recovery, providing ongoing support as their needs evolve. We also provide medication management, if clinically appropriate, for patients who need it. Medication management involves continually monitoring and adjusting the type and dosage of medication required to support recovery safely, especially during withdrawal.

Whole-Person Healing in Hawaii

Our team takes a whole-person approach to healing, considering the physical, emotional, and social aspects of recovery alongside evidence-based clinical care. The spirit of Aloha, reflected in compassion, connection, respect, and belonging, is deeply embedded within our therapeutic environment. Experiential therapies like yoga, meditation, mindfulness, and engagement with Hawaii’s natural surroundings complement the broader treatment experience.

Getting Started With Anxiety and Addiction Treatment in Hawaii

Healing begins with a confidential conversation with our admissions team to understand medical history, recovery goals, and treatment needs. We make use of standardized assessment tools to understand the appropriate level of care and review whether there is alignment with what Hawaii Island Recovery offers. Patients are either admitted to the program or provided expert recommendations on alternative care options that may better suit their medical or clinical needs.

When Anxiety May Require Professional Support

Anxiety is a normal and common response to stress. However, professional support may be appropriate when anxiety is frequent or intense, interferes with daily functioning, or is closely related to substance use disorder.

Anxiety That Interferes With Daily Life

Professional support may be worth exploring if anxiety makes it difficult to work, build relationships, or carry out everyday activities. Some individuals may find it hard to sleep or stay asleep, which can affect how they function when they’re awake. When an individual starts relying on substances to manage their anxiety, or finds the anxiety worsening with substance use, an integrated approach to healing may be necessary.

Anxiety During Recovery

During recovery, anxiety may become more prominent during the early stages as the body adjusts to being substance-free. This does not mean anxiety must simply be endured. Our integrated approach to healing is designed to help manage anxiety and any other co-occurring mental health conditions at every stage of recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Residential treatment may be appropriate when anxiety and substance misuse significantly affect a person’s safety and ability to function, or make progress in their recovery. We recommend beginning with an assessment to determine whether residential treatment or another level of care is more clinically appropriate.
It is common for anxiety to feel worse during the early stages of recovery. The body is working to find its way back to baseline without relying on substances, which can cause some discomfort. Dual diagnosis treatment can help ease symptoms and teach patients to manage their anxiety without relying on substances.
Yes. At Hawaii Island Recovery, our dual diagnosis approach addresses substance abuse and co-occurring trauma or PTSD. Treatment is focused on understanding the factors contributing to substance use and mental health disorders and learning tools to move forward with resilience.

The right level of care depends on multiple factors, including an individual’s current state of health, how long they have used substances, mental health symptoms, and how well they’re able to function outside of an intensive structured setting. Our admissions team will be able to help identify the best approach for your needs, whether that’s residential rehab, outpatient care, or any other form of therapy.
